What sounds good for lunch? Maybe a warm bowl of soup? How about pizza?
If you said “sandwich,” hope you’re not hungry. It’s going to take six months and cost you about $1500.
That’s what Andy George discovered when he set out to find out just what would be involved in making a sandwich from scratch. No trip to the store. No pulling into a Subway. And definitely no calling Jimmy John’s.
Here’s what he did:
- Raised the vegetables
- Grew the wheat to make bread
- Milked a cow and turned milk into cheese
- Fought chickens to get eggs
- Collected honey
- Pickled a cucumber
- Gathered salt from saltwater
- Butchered a chicken
- Finally, made the sandwich
Of course, that doesn’t include making tools to grow vegetables, buying a cow, building bee hives, or creating a vehicle to get him to the ocean to get saltwater.
When you look at it the way Andy did, you realize how important it is for us to be able to trade. To create products that other people can buy, sell them, and then buy other products.
Too often, governments can prevent products from being traded freely. Regulations that may be well-meaning in their intent can in reality block free trade either between nations, states, or even neighbors. Many regulations prevent products from ever being invented in the first place (thankfully the iPhone made it through).
What do you think?

Here’s why Andy made the video in his own words:
Today, getting what you need is as easy as a trip to the store; from food to clothing, energy, medicine, and so much more. Andy George will discover what it takes to make everything from scratch. His mission is to understand complex manufacturing and production processes that are often taken for granted, doing it all himself. Each week he’ll travel the world to bypass the modern supply chain in oder to harvest raw materials straight from the source. Along the way, he’s answering the questions you never thought to ask. Andy George is learning How To Make Everything!

What do you think? Is it more important to encourage trade and innovation or regulate products so more people have to butcher chickens just to make a sandwich?
